Spam on the English forums

I have noticed that there is a huge amount of spam on the English forums. Is there anything that could be done about this? 
It seems that banning the spammers does work for a while, but only for a very short time. I would like to participate on this forum, but the spam is discouraging that quite a bit.

Perhaps it would be an idea to make certain users moderators, or add an additional captcha? Or blacklist certain words?

You're right, spammers are a pain in the ass. I'm constantly cherry-picking their posts and doing permanent ban on them, but they keep returning with new users. I've done a cleaning right now.
I'm hosting the forum myself, so I'll check what additional tools are there to block them before they can create an user to flood the forums with their shit. In theory I enabled a captcha long ago, but it seems that isn't enough.
Sorry for the inconvenience, I'd like you enjoyed the forum more and be an active member.
