Ugh.  On the plus side, looks like you've been able to avoid the spam for over a year now.

Yes, this is a bit of a problem. I avoided spam because I resorted to manual activation of new users. That led to having some legitimate users getting blocked because I missed their request. Some days I switched back to standard email confirmation activation, and spam is happening again. And it's not easy to register: there is reCapthca2 enabled AND email confirmation to avoid bot users...
